Roof Leak - Fix One-Type by Double Sealing the Vent Pipes

On the rear roof of a house, the highly flexible rubbery seal and flashing around the plumbing-drainage vent pipe are generally replaced when the roof is replaced. However, this seal will dry out, crack, fall apart, and leak before the roof needs replacing. One way to prevent this leakage without replacing the surrounding roof shingles is to double-up on the vent seal itself. The sooner this job is done, the better this leak protection is.

What is a plumbing-drainage vent pipe?

Most bathrooms have drainage vent pipes running up through the house walls, attics, and roofs to offset the pressure fluctuations caused by flushing the toilets. These pressure-equalizing vents prevent wastewater backup and other problems. A one-bathroom house will have one vent pipe. A multiple-bathroom house will have several, depending on where the bathrooms are located. By looking at the roof of the house itself, these vents normally appear as uncovered 1-to-4-inch-diameter pipes protruding vertically through the roof by six inches or more. The flashing and seals are located at their shingle-level bases.

Roof Leak - Fix One-Type by Double Sealing the Vent Pipes

What is vent-pipe flashing.

Vent-pipe flashing is a rectangular piece of sheeting having a raised oval-shaped crown at its center with a circular rubbery seal and pipe-hole centered atop the crown. This flashing is fitted down over these pipes before the roofing is laid over its base. Most of this flashing is made from thin aluminum or hard-plastic sheeting. The flexible rubbery seal on top of the crown fits tightly around the pipe by squeeze-gripping it. This seal prevents any rain water from leaking downward around these pipes.

The problem?

The hot sun drys-out the rubbery seal, which, in turn, cracks and falls apart, causing leakage. This damaged condition allows rain water to leak down the outside of the vent pipe, which, in turn, stains and ruins the inside ceilings and walls adjacent to it.

The fix.

If caught early, applying a stretchable caulk to the seal part itself will repair it for a while. However, once the dry damaged seal begins to fall apart in chunks, the caulk could break loose with it, allowing major leakage. A more effective professional-looking way to repair the seal, is to double-up on it. This repair is done by cutting out the crown-and-seal from a new flashing and slipping it over the current crown-and-seal installed already. A new flashing can be found in most major hardware outlets for about . Some of the plastic ones have a tall crown and heavy duty seal, which will aid this overlapping repair. Moreover, this second-layer can be installed long before the original seal begins to dry out or leak, which gives added protection, early.

Normally, to repair a leaking vent-pipe seal, the whole flashing is removed first. This task involves taking up all the shingles around the flashing base, and then replacing them after the new flashing is installed. But, when a second crown-and-seal is fitted atop the old one as explained above, the bottom-end of the new crown will fit onto or near the old flashing base. There, it can caulked for a sturdy leak-proof attachment. No shingles need to be removed, which makes this repair fast, effective, and affordable.

What Are the Primary Goals of Information Security?

It doesn't take a proverbial rocket scientist to figure out basic goals of information security. In fact, the major goal is in the name itself: securing information. The twin sister field called information assurance, also has the main goal in its title.

But if you've been reading these all along, the goals of this growing field (and your roles and responsibilities in it) should be getting clearer. Just as there were three large, overarching areas that organizations and companies need to consider in the security realm, so too there are three goals that each security policy should highlight: prevention, detection, and response. No policy should exist that doesn't address these three goals.

Prevention is the means and methods that security professionals use to block someone from entering a network. Expanded to a more global aspect, prevention is not allowing someone access to your site or building. Prevention is stopping that person before he or she penetrates a system or facility.

What Are the Primary Goals of Information Security?

Detection is being able to identify activities as they occur. If someone is breaking into your building you want to know this moment that this is occurring. Knowing about it an hour or even a few minutes after the fact is not a good practice. Much damage can be done in five minutes and certainly in 30 minutes or more. Detection is the ability to identify and halt someone at the moment.

Finally, response is methodologies and procedures you have in place to deal with an intrusion. Responses should be appropriate to the incident. For instance, if you discover through detection software that someone is merely pinging your site to check for vulnerabilities, there's no need to send an alarm to the FBI because you detected the attempt, identified the source and IP address, verified it against all your database and determined that it wasn't malicious. Those corporate policies should be well established and in place. However, if that same person keeps pinging your site for hours on end trying to find a hole in your security, you will want to take broader actions.

Information security goals should be the norm of every help desk and security professional tasked to guard your company's or the government's public sector network. When these are set in motion, securing the information will be a breeze. If, however, management gets lax in implementing the policies or the system administrator neglects her duties, it can have a devastating effect on the company's entire security posture.

How To Repair The Acer D2D Recovery

This tutorial can also help to do it on other computer brands

Disclaimer : First of all you must be aware that some of the operations to come can cause irreversible change on your hard disk, I recommend to you and I will never make it enough make a backup of your system before launching you in any hazardous operation. Any damage and/or modification done on your system will be under your whole responsibility. The following procedures were done on a Acer Aspire 5102wlmi and some also functioned on a Dell Inspiron 9400/1705.

Data Backup

As you know, the Acer computers and those of other manufacturers are now delivered with a system of restoration installed in a hidden partition of your hard disk. This system launches out while pressing keys ALT+F10 simultaneously. And sometimes for various reasons this system ceases functioning.

How To Repair The Acer D2D Recovery

The first cause often comes owing to the fact that function D2D Recovery is disable in the bios (menu principal).

The solution : enable the function and try to press keys ALT+F10 during the starting of the computer.

The second cause : in this case hidden partition PQSERVICE was erased or damaged, or you replaced the disc and in this case it is not present.

The solution : If you did not previously make a backup of your system by making an image disc. It will not be possible to use the D2D recovery. Your only hope will be to have in your possession Acer Recovery CD/DVD.

And the third causes : the Acer Master Boot Record (MBR)was damaged or replaced by non-Acer MBR. As long as partition PQSERVICE is present or that you can put the hand on the necessary Acer files you can reinstall the MBR of Acer.

The solution :

First method : on a functional Windows system:

1 disable the D2D recovery option of the bios.

2 open a Windows session with an account administrator.

3 Download, unzip and launch partedit32(registration required for download).

4 Identify the Pqservice partition by its size (at the bottom of the partedit window there is a partition information box) it is a small sized partition approximately 2 to 6 Go.Once made change the type of your partition into 0C and save. Restart and open a session with an administrator account, you should be able to navigate to the PQservice partition. Seek these two files mbrwrdos.exe and rtmbr.bin once localised open a command prompt and launch this command mbrwrdos.exe install rtmbr.bin, this will install the Acer MBR. Close the command prompt window restart again Windows go into the bios and reactivate the D2D recovery. Now ALT+F10 should launch Acer recovery at the starting of the computer.

Second method : On a nonfunctional Windows system.

For that you must use a Linux distribution (for me Mandriva provided all the tools necessary).

1 Boot on the Mandriva install CD/DVD the boot menu will give you the possibility to repair or to restore the Windows boot loader.

2 If that is not enough launch an installation of linux(this will be an occasion to test this terrible OS) and choose LILO as boot loader(a boot menu that allow you to choose between several operating systems) once finished the installation. Restart your computer in the boot loader menu system you will have at least 2 Windows options the first generally point to PQservice choose it and you will boot directly into acer D2D recovery.

The last solution is the simplest one, just note that during the Linux installation you will have to resize your Windows partition to create a place for a new Linux partition it is the most perilous part because irreversible, therefore take your precautions at this time.

Windows XP Registry Repair is Easier Than You Think

Windows XP Registry repair sounds daunting and difficult, but it is easy if you have the proper tools for the job.

Is your computer experiencing the following symptoms?

Data Backup

Sluggish Performance Lots of Error Messages Freezes Crashes The "Blue Screen Of Death" Slow Bootups

Windows XP Registry Repair is Easier Than You Think

If the answer is yes, there may be errors and invalid entries in your Windows registry, a filing system for settings and preferences related to software, hardware, and the operating system itself. The registry is like the central nervous system of your computer, and if it is compromised your computer will experience any number of annoying problems. Fortunately you do not need to be a computer technician to fix these disturbances.

Three easy steps to follow:

First of all, before you perform any sort of Windows XP registry repair, you will definitely want to make a new Windows restore point and a backup of the registry. This way, if any damages occur while you are cleaning it, you will be able to revert back to where you started.

1.) First, go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore. Click the option to create a new restore point, name it, and then click create. This will make sure you have an up-to-date restore point for your operating system.

2.) Second, go to Start - Run, and then type in REGEDIT. This will open the registry editor. Don't touch anything! Messing with the registry can be dangerous if you don't know exactly what you're doing. Go to File - Export, and then pick a place to save your .reg file. Name your file (maybe something with the date in it), and click save. This creates a file with all the vital information in it should you need to revert back.

3.) Now that you have the proper safety backups in place, you can now proceed to the Windows XP registry repair itself. The best way to do this is to use a specialized software program, such as RegCure. These programs will perform a deep scan and find corrupted, broken, and empty files and allow you to delete them. These programs will also allow you to make backups and repair any fixes that you have performed that you need to undo.

Make sure you use a reputable program for the job, since some are not as good as others. A few top programs are RegCure by ParetoLogic, and Registry Mechanic by PCTools.

How to Recover Deleted Emails Permanently Erased From Outlook Express and AOL

Did you just happen to accidentally delete an important email message that you really needed? Are you kicking yourself and can't believe how you could let such a thing happen? Well relax, take a breather, and give yourself a break, because your emails haven't actually been permanently erased yet. With the right tools you are able to recover deleted emails from Outlook Express, and other email clients such as AOL, quite easily these days. However the trick to getting them back is to act as quick as possible!

So how are deleted emails recoverable you might be asking? Well when you delete an email from your email programs trash folder, it doesn't actually get permanently deleted. The email is still present on your computer's hard drive; however your computer is just unable to locate it because it doesn't know where it went. What has actually happened is that the space that was occupied by the deleted email is now available as re-use space and until that space is overwritten by new files you can still restore your email messages and get them back.

Data Backup

Now in order to fully recover deleted emails from Microsoft Outlook you must act fast! This is due to the fact that when you use your computer you are always downloading and installing new stuff, eventually you will use the space that became available from your deleted email and it will be overwritten. Hence the longer you wait in recovering your lost emails the greater your chances of a full recovery decrease. However if you have a fairly large hard drive with plenty of free-space then your computer will use the already existing free-space before it touches the space created from the deleted email. Therefore if you have plenty of free space on your hard drive or you just recently deleted your email then it is almost certain that you will be able to recover permanently deleted emails with the aid of a good email recovery program.

How Data Is Stored On A Hard Drive

When a file is saved on a computer, the data is stored on the hard disk platter's magnetic coating. This magnetic coating on the platters is the 'glue' that keeps your data. Any damage to that magnetic coating means that there is data loss as each piece of missing coating contains data. So a platter missing a little bit of that coating has a better chance of a successful data recovery as opposed to a platter that has had massive amounts of that magnetic coating removed or destroyed.

Hard Drive Failure Parts

Data Backup

Typical hard disk components that fail include:

How Data Is Stored On A Hard Drive

Platters Hard disk platters, or spindle, is rotated by an electric motor. The speed of this rotation is measured in rotations per minute (RPM) and the higher the performance of the hard drive...the higher the RPM is which increases the reading and writing of data to the platters. Any surface contact to the platters can cause serious damage to the magnetic strip the contains the data. This includes dust, finger prints, water, and most important of all, the heads of the hard drive. Platter damage is the most serious type of damage to cause hard drive failure.

Heads (Head Crash) When the hard disk is not actively in use, the heads are parked until the hard drive needs to read or write data again. It is when this head moves outside the super thin cushion of air between platters that causes the head to crash and touches the hard disk platter.

Firmware Firmware is the program instructions located on the chips on the Printed Circuit Board (PCB). Each firmware revision is specific to its hard drive type and each hard drive can go through dozens of firmware revisions to increase that particular manufacturer's disk drive's performance. The older the hard drive, the more difficult it could be to find a working firmware for that specific hard disk model.

Printed Circuit Board (PCB) The PCB of the hard drive is the electronics of the hard disk that manages and operates the hard drive. If a PCB becomes damaged it is often replaced with an identical PCB with the same firmware on the original hard drive. Typically PCB damage is from water or fire, but there are other reasons why a PCB would fail. And many times a failed PCB affect other aspects like firmware or heads.

Types of Hard Drive Failure

Generally speaking, when a disk drive fails it is due to one of the following causes:

Media Failure Otherwise known as a head crash (as described above), the heads of the hard drive have physically touched and damaged the magnetic coating on the platters.

Mechanical Failure Generally speaking, any electronic failure to the hard drive falls in this category. Fire, water, electrical damage to the hard disk would require 'parts' replacement.

PCB Failure As described above, PCB failure falls in the mechanical failure type and typically can be 'swapped out' for an identical PCB for that specific hard drive type. Along with the correct firmware for that disk drive, a PCB replacement can be a difficult type of hard drive repair if the hard drive is an older model.

Logical Drive Failure This type of hard drive failure is usually the least damaging to the data. This type of error usually means that the operating system of the computer (or utilities) can see the drive, has marked it as unallocated space, but because the computer's MFT is corrupted or damaged, can't read the data. Hard drive failure of this type is not that destructive and the chances of a complete successful data recovery are high.

Types of Non-Mechanical Hard Drive Failure

Other causes for data loss and why data recovery would be required could include the following:

Natural Disasters Extreme weather conditions that are out of our control can make a bad day even worse. Whether the computer was submerged in water due to a flood, scorched by fire or in the proximity of a lightning strike, there is still a chance to recover data from the hard drive.

The Human Factor Accidentally deleting files, formatting the wrong hard drive, and attempting to upgrade you operating system only to have it fail are common issues that come up. Also, as careful as most people are with their laptops, a small drop from the couch to the floor or down a flight of stairs, is the type of forceful jarring to the disk drive that could cause serious damage to the hard drive platters.

Viruses E-mail typically are the way most viruses are spread from computer to computer. Also, visiting questionable websites that have scripts, malware or spyware waiting to comprise your system and put your data at risk. It is recommended to run the most recent anti-virus software to protect your data from this sort of data loss and to reduce the need to require data recovery service.

So how do you protect yourself from losing your data? Back it up! However, should you still require data recovery services, be sure to use a company that specializes in hard drive data recovery.
