Online Backup - What is Online Backup?

It has been said that more than half of internet users have encountered data loss in the past. Online backup is a type of service that addresses this problem. Specifically, there is an online system that is designed to store or backup computer files for the users' convenience. Those who avail of this service would also have a software that would collect, compress and transfer the data to the servers of remote backup service providers. There is usually a schedule being followed when the computer files are to be collected, the most common being once a day.

The frequency of the data being collected depends on the target market of the specific service provider. There are LAN-based service providers for online storage solutions that can offer as much as real-time data collecting. This means that the computer files being stored are updated almost as often as the original files are. For establishments and companies that are very much dependent on computer files, these backup systems are indeed very assuring. This kind of service would be handy for disaster recovery. It would also be useful for restoring files that are accidentally deleted or corrupted for whatever reason.

There are varied types of data storage devices and the degree of security and portability vary. In the case of online backup service systems, software that has been altered to suit a client's needs is installed. The software basically is for computer files to be selected, extracted and manipulated before being sent to the storage server. There are many components that have been developed to make the transmission procedure and accessibility more dependable and versatile. For instance, there are compression techniques, encryption techniques that and de-duplication techniques to guarantee that stored data would be safe and is able to utilize the capacity and features of the provider.

Online Backup - What is Online Backup?

These online backup systems do not require user intervention meaning there is no need for changing tapes, labeling and other bothersome procedures to make sure that the computer files would be updated or organized. Since the data is stored elsewhere and not the same location where the original data is saved makes it more effective. The remote backup services that are continuous would back up files as they are changing. Remote back up services would also maintain different versions of the files and take note of the changes so that it would be possible to recover parts of it.

Since broadband internet access became more accessible to the public, online backup providers gained more clients. However, the internet speed of households still cannot be keep up with the speed capacity of storage devices. This poses a problem for those who need to store or modify large amounts of data. There are also privacy issues to be worried about especially when the files being stored also contain personal and sensitive data. A client would be charged for the online backup services according to certain factors. It could be dependent on how much data is being backed up, the number of versions of the files that are being maintained and the archiving options for the computer files stored. Because online backup service providers do not guarantee that the computer files stored can be kept private, most of them recommend that the files should be encrypted before they are to be transferred.

How To Become a Computer Technician

So you want to be a Computer Technician, but you don't know how? Well guess what, I am going to tell you how.

First things first, I am blunt and to the point. I hate typing and thinking about grammar, that is why I went into the Technology field.

I have over 10 years experience in web design, computer networking, hardware, software, java programming, Apple & IBM (pc) format computers, telephone work, home theatres etc, etc, etc, & I make a lot of money doing. So basically I know what I am talking about & I am going to give you some advice that took me 10 long, hard years to learn.

How To Become a Computer Technician

1. MOST IMPORTANT: LEARN how to find the right answers. This can be true for ANY field, ANY person works in. You do not need to know everything, and guess what, if you spent the next 10 years reading, going to school & obtaining certifications, you still wouldn't know all there is to know in the field of Technology. But if you can figure out what resources will help you find a solution for you the fastest, then you are on your way.

2. Go to school and/or get certifications. Of course you need to learn about computers, software, hardware etc to become a computer technician. Find something that fits you, something that makes you excited to go. 4 year schools are not for every one, so make sure they are right for you if you choose to go. In my 4 years in college the only thing I learned to do is program at Level II in Java (a blind monkey could program at that level) and drink a lot of beer. 2 year schools are good because the get straight to the point about the actual jobs you will be doing out in the REAL world. (I was offered a teaching position at one of these 2 year schools at the ripe old age of 25, I laughed in their face & said no because of the salary they were offering). Certifications are important regardless if you get a 2 or 4 year degree. They tell other people that have NO CLUE about technology that you, indeed have a clue about technology

Did you follow that?

A couple of certifications that I highly recommend are the A+, Networking + and any Microsoft Support Certification.

3. Be patient, with yourself and the people you work with. You will always be learning if you become a computer technician. The average lifespan for a particular model of technology (ie computers) is about 2 years. Meaning as soon as you buy it, it is OLD. Things change everyday in Technology and you have to keep up with it!

4. Have a Positive Attitude! Remember, when people call you or you are dispatched out to work on someone's computer, TV etc, they usually are frustrated. Most people will try to fix the issue themselves before calling anyone because they are cheap. By the time you or I get there they are ready to cry. A positive and friendly attitude will go an EXTREMELY LONG WAY. You will be their savior and they will tell all their friends about you. This point might be the most difficult, especially in Technology because not very many people understand how it works and because our lives are so dependent on it.

That is it, 4 simple steps.

Can you handle it?

These are the 4 things I have tried to do over the last 10 years. Trust me, I am no genius, not by a long shot. But I figured out how to find the right answer for the problem, combined with an education, some certifications and the right attitude, I have people knocking down my door for my services.

Read this article a couple of times until this info really sinks in. This advice works so use it!

Stop sitting there and get busy!

For more information on How To Become a Computer Technician, check out a couple of this sites I have listed in my bio, those will help.

Good Luck!

Here is What to Do When Your Computer Crashes

It is extremely frustrating and annoying when your computer crashes. This is an all too common occurrence. Unfortunately when this happens most people do not know what to do. Here is help so what to do when your computer crashes and how to prevent it in the future.

Knowing that computer crashes are inevitable it is important save your work regularly. There is nothing worse than losing valuable data or a document you have spent time working on, because your computer crashes unexpectedly.

So what causes a crash and what can you do when your computer crashes?

Here is What to Do When Your Computer Crashes

The first thing you need to do when your computer crashes is to ascertain the reason behind it. This can often be difficult if the computer completely shuts down or goes to a black screen. But if you pay close attention you will be clued in to the symptoms and signs that may help you to store your data and also prevent a crash.

Be sure to resist any emotional response when your computer crashes. Some people think tapping or hitting their computer can fix the problem. Others experience rage and want to throw it out the window. Neither action will help matters.

On most occasions your computer crashes when because it gets over heated. The intense heat generated causes your computer to temporarily shut down in order to cool the system and re boot again. You need to be cautious with over-heating problems as intense heat generated can result in hardware damage or even failure needing you to replace a drive.

If your computer is stored in an area that does not get good ventilation it can over heat easily. Also, if the computer housing has a fan at the back and it gets covered with dust this will not allow air to flow properly and that can lead to over-heating.

A surge in the power supply can also cause your computer to crash as it cannot handle the excess power. In severe cases your computer may not power up at all. This can usually be avoided by using a surge protector power strip.

Software problems involving viruses or software conflicts can also be the cause of computer crashes. These are problems a computer technician is best at solving.

Another common cause for a computer crash is the one involving the registry files of your personal computer. Very few personal computer users are aware of the registry folder that sorts, stores and keeps track of all the valuable information on the software and hardware, including drive space and other programs that are essential for your computer to run smoothly.

Registry database is perhaps the most frequently used as well as the most important part of the "Windows" operating system. It is also the biggest cause of most computer errors and computer crashes. This is because "Windows" requires accessing the registry database for everything.

Hundreds of registry files are opened edited or in use every time that Windows perform any task on your computer. That sometimes creates confusion leading to improper saving of such files. As a result these files often get damaged or even corrupted. So the Windows find it difficult to read such files which slows down your personal computer and leads in error message or a total computer crash.

The way to prevent registry computer crashes is the use of a registry cleaning device on a regular basis, and defragmenting your computer once in a while. Once you download a good registry cleaning device and schedule it to clean your computer at least once a week, your computer will run more efficiently with fewer error messages and not crash as often.

Chkdsk Can't Repair FAT32 Volume

FAT32 is supported by Windows XP, 2003, 2000 and Vista (logical drives) and holds cluster values in 32-bit field. This file system can undergo corruption and need Data Recovery. The primary repair option is to run Chkdsk. Windows includes Chkdsk so as to check file system integrity and fix logical errors and can be run through Command Prompt or Recovery Console.

In few of the cases, the Chkdsk utility may unexpectedly quit without curing corruption. Though the corruption exists and volumes are corrupt and inaccessible, but the utility may prompt the correct file system type:

"The type of the file system is FAT32.
Volume Serial Number is C408-2213"

Chkdsk Can't Repair FAT32 Volume

However, if we run Chkdsk, without the use of any command-line switches, the volume is reported corrupt and running chkdsk e: command may prompt an error, but the corruption problem may still remain the same:

"The type of the file system is FAT32.
Volume Serial Number is C408-2213

Errors found. CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only mode.

Reason

This is a specific problem when Boot sector (Primary program to boot the system) is corrupt. The errors lies in the way Chksk handles the Boot sector and its backup copy, which is located at sector 6 of logical drive. Ideally, Chkdsk should make use of the backup copy to offer Data Recovery, but it doesn't do this because the primary boot sector is not located in a bad sector and contains invalid information and at this condition Chkdsk fails to use the backup copy of Boot sector.

Solution

In order to gain file system repair and hence Data Recovery, this is vital that the backup copy must be restored for use. We can make use of DiskProbe utility which can replace the corrupt primary Boot sector information, placed at sector 0 with that of Boot sector copy, placed at sector 6.

·        DiskProbe is a GUI sector editor tool and is operable when the user has local Administrator rights. This is a specialized tool which can repair many of the disk corruption errors, replace the MBR, damaged partition table information and Boot sectors as well. But, viewing the boot sectors as a FAT boot sector through View menu can make the backup copy also corrupt and hence Data Recovery Software remain the only solutions to retrieve the lost data after formatting the drive ( Formatting refreshes the file system)

Data Recovery Software are the powerful applications which can scan the drive for lost data and then recover it. These applications are safe and interactive at Data Recovery and hence are complete to extract data.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery uses the powerful scanning algorithms and offers Data Recovery through graphically rich interface. This Data Recovery Software is compatible with FAT16, FAT32, VFAT, NTFS and NTFS5  file systems. Stellar also offers different Data Recovery Software for UNIX, Novell, Macintosh and Linux operating systems.

Review of LiveDrive Online Backup, Storage and Sync

Overview and History
LiveDrive is financed by Andrew Michael. Andrew founded Fasthosts Internet Limited, The United Kingdom's premier and most successful Internet service provider which was sold in 2006 for in excess of 0m. Andrew commented: "Online storage is the future. Lots of companies are trying to do it today but the products are crap and not a replacement for traditional storage methods. LiveDrive has been over two years in the making and will be the standard by which all competing products are judged". LiveDrive offers two options: LiveDrive Backup and LiveDrive Briefcase (Pro). The Backup edition can backup of unlimited online devices and an unlimited quantity of files. The Briefcase or Pro edition retains all the features of the Backup version but also gives sharing and synchronization of data from unlimited online devices.

Feature Set
Security
LiveDrive uses 128bit SSL encoding to their web site along with password protection for your account. Information transfer to and from the servers is protected by 256bit AES encoding - the most secure protection we have found for file transfers. When on their servers, your data is protected with 256 AES encryption (that's military grade) and you can setup your own private key to manage the encryption if you wish. Physically, your data is stored on state of the art servers in geographically separated data centers. These were originally only in the UK, however, since expanding their service to other global regions, they have also widened their network of data centers which makes your data more secure.

Backup Features
One of the most notable features of LiveDrive Backup is that it is really unlimited. While using LiveDrive we have backed up many terabytes of data. Putting files on the backup schedule is as straightforward as right-clicking the file or folder and choosing 'add to backup' via the LiveDrive submenu. When added to the archive schedule, files are examined for amendments and scheduled for archiving as and when they are amended. File versioning is automatically enabled on any files within the backup set and are permitted up to thirty copies of an individual file. Open files will also backed up on a regular basis and because of the 'block level incrementation' technology just the amended bits of files are uploaded and these are then used to create a new version of the file. This method massively reduces the amount of information that must be uploaded. Network drives and removable devices such as pen drives or other plug-and-play products can also be backed up. A progress indicator is included status messages so you know what is being backed up and what is awaiting to be transmitted.

Review of LiveDrive Online Backup, Storage and Sync

Restore Features
You are allowed to restore up to 30 different editions of any file that has been archived by entering the web site, selecting the file you wish to restore and selecting the edition of the file by means of date and time. When selected simply decide where you would like the file restored to and the portal will start the restore process. separate upload and download throttling controls in the desktop client but no processor controls. Socks Proxy servers can be setup which is useful if you are in a public environment and can only access the internet via a proxy server. You can also set priorities of types of files, emagine if you are gradually uploading your entire music collection, you should configure office docs and other file types ahead of video files so that your more vital data is backed up more quickly.

Interface
LiveDrive blends extremely well with the desktop on PC and MAC. It gives a system tray icon to permit quick access to information and option screens. The web site is extremely easy to navigate and use. There are many collaboration, file sharing and synchronization options available in the pro version of LiveDrive which is called Briefcase. Devices do need the client software installed to run LiveDrive but this is a simple and straightforward process that takes a few minutes to download and setup.

Device Support
Currently LiveDrive supports Microsoft Windows - XP, Vista and Seven; MAC OS 10.5+; iPhone OS 3.0+; Blackberry and any online-enabled toy via the web portal.

Limitations
None found so far.

Collaboration and Synchronization
If you go for the Pro or Briefcase version of LiveDrive then you get a greate set of collaboration and synchronization tools added to your unlimited online backup solution. When you turn on the Briefcase option a virtual drive is created on each PC (or MAC) enabling you to store all your shared files. Initially the drive letter it L: however this can be changed via the client software. Any file that is moved or copied to this logical drive is copied to the web site and from there to all other devices that have the briefcase feature in use and are setup for the same LiveDrive Account. File conflicts are configurable and can be set to carry out an automatic option of your choosing or to ask what to do with each issue. There is also a beta feature called 'LAN synching' which allows devices on the same network (for instance you may have a MAC, notebook and Blackberry all using the same router) to sync data inside your network instead of sending all the changes to the internet and back. This is a really useful feature especially if you have a load of files that you have to initially update on one or several devices. Another very useful feature of the Briefcase is the option to have a local cached version of all your data from the logical drive. Therefore you have access to the virtual drive even when you are not online. When you re-connect to the internet, the changed files will be updated on the web portal and amendments are pushed out to the other devices as and when they also come online.

File Sharing
File sharing is available in the web portal and in the client software - if running the Briefcase version. Merely pick the file or folder you need to share, use the share link and then choose to share privately or publicly. Public File Sharing means everyone with the exact website address see the file. If this option is chosen, you are given a unique website address for every file. Which can then be distributed to anyone you want. Private File Sharing allows only people you choose have access to the file. If this option is chosen then you must enter the email addresses for every person you want to have access to the file. You can also append a personal message to provide more information about the file you are granting access to. The system then sends an email to all of the addresses previously setup showing general information, your private message and a unique web address for the file being shared.

Web 2.0 Integration
LiveDrive has a music and video player built into the web portal, as well as a handy slideshow function. LiveDrive is also connected to several online apps including: Facebook, Flickr, SmugMug, Photo Flexer, Zoho, Spibd, PicNik and others. This means you can get to and amend the majority of your files directly from the web portal.

Customer Support
There is no telephone or online chat support. However, not counting wanting to make unusual requests (which we did via email) there has been no need to talk directly to LiveDrive's support. There is an email form in the client software and on the web portal which they answer very quickly in our experience. The Forum and Blog are great ways to receive information or get questions solved from both fellow users as well as from LiveDrive's technical support team. The FAQ and knowledgebase are good for standard queries as is the demo on their website and there are case studies available on their website. A free version is not available however a 14 day free trial is available on both types of account.

Ease Of Use
LiveDrive is extremely easy to use. After subscribing, you can download the client utility to your internet enabled devices and either start backing up your information or - if you have opted for the far more useful Briefcase option - begin moving folders to the L: drive. Restores and file sharing are a breeze to use and integrating with online services to amend information when on the move couldn't be easier.

Cost
Initial setup: Free 14 day trial
Monthly plan costs: Basic - .95/mth; Pro - .95/mth
Yearly plan costs: Basic - .50 / yr; Pro - 9.50 / yr
Initial allowed storage amount: Unlimited
Cost of additional storage: No cost
Cost of additional devices / users: No cost
Referral Program: Yes
E-billing facility: Yes

Conclusion
LiveDrive is a great archiving tool, it is tucked away cleanly and only shows itself when necessary. If you opt for the Briefcase version then the host of features you receive more than rationalizes the extra cost. With the broad range of integration with internet toys and internet utilities you have a complete online storage and workspace that automatically syncs with all your web devices. For small businesses this is a great way to collaborate your team together and keep your projects up- to-date. For individuals it is a brilliant approach to provide a secure central storage location for all your data. There are cheaper Online Storage and Online Backup solutions available; yet, In our opinion there are no better ones. LiveDrive's unique blend of easy interaction and great range of functionality make it a sure winner. On top of all that, if you select the yearly plan, you get 2 months free and an extra 10% off FOR LIFE!

Effective oil and gas data management facilitates desktop access to numerous up-to-date databases, including those related to surface and subsurface land, wells, pressure, production, pipelines, core, reserves, seismic and logs. The capturing, storing and accessing of valuable data regarding oil and gas is made easy by oil and gas data management tools. In the competitive and challenging field of oil and gas market, rigorous data management and analysis tools are very essential.

Oil and gas data management tools are designed for use by geologists, engineers, geophysicists, technologists, land personnel, managers, accounting staff, financial investors and other oil and gas professionals. One of the key requirements for oil and gas data management is to have a well defined management strategy. The management techniques involve storing data, information and knowledge such as prospect evaluations, reservoir and earth studies etc. The required data can at any time be accessed by a user by typing in a key word or phrase. Storing data and accessing it has become much easier, compared to the earlier printed format.

Oil and gas companies employ modern sophisticated tools to optimize data management ? project consulting is one of the tools. These companies seek the help of outsourced firms for project management and also in optimizing organizational effectiveness, drilling, reservoir productivity, geophysical and geological technologies, and information technology. Prominent companies rely heavily on service companies and other vendors to develop and maintain advanced technologies for easy managing of data.

Oil and Gas Data Management

Service companies in this regard gives a variety of products and services that make management easy and consolidate storage resources on the network for a better, more cost-effective data management. These service providers give server, storage, tape, and required software and support services. The software has maximum scalability, performance, and throughput for data-intensive applications. How to Solve Sending Reported Error (0x80040201) Error in Outlook

Microsoft Outlook supports using IMAP (Internet Mail Access Protocol 4) account that uses a personal folders (.pst) file as the default e-mail store. A PST can get corrupt for several reasons and show abrupt symptoms, such as described below. These events create situations that demand for PST Recovery solutions.

For example, consider a situation when you try to send an e-mail message in MS Outlook 2003, which is configured to use an IMAP account. The message sending fails and you receive an error message as mentioned below:

"Sending reported error (0x80040201): 'Unknown Error 0x80040201."

How to Solve Sending Reported Error (0x80040201) Error in Outlook

You might observe additional symptoms like you fail to delete email items from your personal folder.

Cause

All these symptoms indicate that the Outlook PST that you are using as the default data file is corrupted. The most probable reason could be PST file size above 2 GB. MS Outlook 2002 and its earlier versions have a file size limitation of 2 GB for PST, beyond which PST gains chances of being corrupted. However, PST file corruption can also result from other reasons too.

Solution

To repair the corrupted PST, Outlook installation includes a Scanpst.exe file. The file launches 'Inbox Repair Tool' that can fix most of the corruption issues associated with Outlook PST. This is a hidden file, so make sure that the 'Show hidden files and folders' option is enabled to view the file. Further, you can follow these steps to start repair:

1. Close Outlook
2. Click 'Start' and then 'Find' or 'Search'
3. Type 'scanpst.exe' in the search box
4. Double-click the file to open 'Inbox Repair Tool'
5. Browse to the affected PST and specify the file name
6. Click 'Start' to begin repair
7. Click 'OK'

The Inbox Repair Tool(scanpst.exe) cannot repair the PST that is above 2 GB in size. Though you can use the 2 GB truncation utility to crop the file first and then repair, but this causes specified value of data to lose. A more efficient and safe solution to repair such PST (or any corrupted PST) is to use a commercially built PST Recovery Software. These applications are perfectly designed PST(personal storage file) Recovery utilities that use advanced scanning algorithms to examine and repair the corrupted Outlook personal folder.

PST File Recovery Software is a user-friendly utility that repairs corrupted PST and restores it with original content and view. The PST Recovery Software supports MS Outlook 2007, 2003, 2002, and 2000. The software offers a 3-pane interface, similar to what Outlook appears. The tool is compatible with Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2003, and 2000.

Good Luck!
